Les cours de préparation aux sujets au programme en civilisation sont assurés par des spécialistes.
Les cours sont répartis en cours magistraux (CM) et travaux dirigés (TD), permettant aux étudiant.e.s d’acquérir des connaissances théoriques et historiques, puis de les mettre en pratique. Afin de mieux gérer le travail des étudiant.e.s, les œuvres sont traitées de façon échelonnée tout au cours de l’année (le sujet d’option pour l’oral est ainsi traité au 3e trimestre).

La question de civilisation américaine au programme de l’agrégation externe d’anglais porte sur la Révolution américaine (1763-1783). D’une amplitude chronologique en apparence limitée — une vingtaine d’années seulement — cette question invite cependant à explorer les ramifications profondes et étendues qui sous-tendent ces deux décennies fondatrices, dans leurs dimensions spatiales, politiques, géopolitiques, sociales, raciales, intellectuelles et culturelles. De fait, étudier la Révolution américaine depuis le traité de Paris de 1763 jusqu’à celui de 1783 suppose de dépasser une approche strictement institutionnelle, militaire et diplomatique, centrée autour des Treize colonies et de la guerre d’Indépendance, pour replacer cette période dans un contexte plus large, à la fois continental et transatlantique. Cet objet d’étude requiert, en effet, d’élargir la focale géographique pour mieux appréhender la diversité des espaces impériaux et coloniaux et resituer la Révolution au cœur d’un faisceau complexe de motivations, d’enjeux, d’intérêts et d’acteurs, qui révèlent les ambivalences, les discontinuités et les contingences d’une période à l’issue incertaine.
Pour aborder le sujet, on conseillera d’abord de lire attentivement le texte de cadrage et de visionner la table ronde de présentation par les conceptrices de la question. Les rapports du jury des sessions précédentes pourront également être consultés à profit afin de bien cerner le format et les attendus des épreuves.
Il est également recommandé de se familiariser avec la chronologie de la question afin de poser quelques repères historiques : la fin de la guerre de Sept Ans et le traité de Paris de 1763 ; la Royal Proclamation (1763) ; le Stamp Act (1765) ; les Townshend Acts (1767) ; le Boston Massacre (1770) ; le Tea Act et la Boston Tea Party (1773) ; les batailles de Lexington et Concord et la création du deuxième Congrès continental (1775) ; le début de la guerre contre la Grande-Bretagne (1775) ; la publication de Common Sense et la Déclaration d’Indépendance (1776), l’adoption des Articles of Confederation par le Congrès continental (1777) ; l’entrée en guerre de la France (1778) ; la victoire de Yorktown (1781) ; la ratification des Articles of Confederation (1781) ; le traité de Paris (1783) qui met fin à la guerre. Autant de repères qui infléchissent la trajectoire révolutionnaire et permettent d’inscrire son déploiement dans des temporalités distinctes qu’il s’agira de bien maitriser.
